3 story fire, 10/7-8/05

One of Bethel's few 3-Story houses caught fire the night of the 7th. The fire was first reported a little after 9:30pm. Engine 3 arrived to find a 3-story structure fully involved on the 2nd and 3rd stories. It took firefighters approximately 6 hours to get the fire under control, though it wasn't completely extenguished for another day.

In the afternoon of the 8th, the building was torn down.

Tuluksak Fire 6/27/05

The morning of the 27th of June, 2005, a fire broke out in the Old School building in Tuluksak. The fire started a little after 1:00am. At 4:00am, Tuluksak called for help from Bethel and Kwethluk, fearing fire spread to the trees, the New School building, and the village fuel tanks. Help arrived at 5:20, but by then the old school had burned itself down as not to cause anymore danger, and the people of Tuluksak had done an awesome job of keeping the fire contained.

Sunsets

Sunsets are beautiful. I've always thought so. And maybe I'm biased, but I've always thought the sunsets in Alaska are the prettiest I've ever seen. I remember many nights, coming home from fishcamp at the end of a long day, with the calm water of the river reflecting dynamic purple clouds set in a background of pink. Or sometimes the sky would be a beautiful slowly darkening blue, sharply contrasting with the blazing pink of the cottony clouds. Maybe I'm biased, or maybe Alaska really does have the most beautiful sunsets ever.
